Resolved PB2022 worth the wait?

Hi,

Sorry for asking again: Is there any ETA for 2022? The last time I asked, I think it was estimated at the end of August or early September.

I know a company that wants to start migration to PB2021 soon and I'm wondering if it might be worth to wait for 2022, since that version will be LTS, if the wait isn't too long.

Hi Miguel,

PB 2022 is still on track.  Internally we already have release candidates so I don’t see reason why we can’t deliver early September.

However, initial release of PB 2022 is not LTS.  Revision 3 would most likely be what we designate as LTS.  Then again, 2021 is not LTS either.

I suggest to look at the new features and if any of those benefit your project go with 2022.  Also, some beta testers have given feedback 2022 has better performance.

NOTE: PB 2021 IDE can use/run/select the PB 2019R3 runtimes. (I cannot try PB2022 beta with prior versions since i have it on separate vm.)

Will the newer IDE's automatically exclude prior full versions, or only if they are incompatible? Is the PB21 with PB19R3 supported, or is that a bug (not really an issue for me as we are skipping PB21).



fwiw, having the IDEs work with all runtime builds within its version is great, this limitation of not working that way with full version changes is (IMO) very very very very minor. Just want the IDE to check for us that we aren't running/building unsupported runtimes in a given IDE.

Yes, the PB IDE won't display any runtimes that are not compatible.

PB 2021 supported 2019 R3 because really 2021 was 2019 R4 in terms of the product development. But going forward, we plan to follow a consistent rule to not confuse our customers. The rules are exactly as Mark outlined above.

Hi Miguel,

 

I'm beta testing PB2022 - It is the best PB release EVER! 

SUPER FAST!

 

There are not many visual improvements for CS apps. But it just works super fast and reliable. And the x64 debugging is amazing if you are on the road for x64. However for x64, be aware that you have to go through external functions calls and make sure you are using the correct data types. Previous PB version did not care that much.

I just want the possible customer to be aware of the upcoming release. In my opinion, it shouldn't be to hard to upgrade from 2021 to 2022 anyway.

Very useful info Armeen!

So ... no more multi-runtimes in pb2022 and back to having runtime dlls with numbers in it? Not really a problem, except for having to adapt the installer again to copy the dlls with changed names.

No, i think runtime version is just for the PBDs that get distributed, not dlls:

pbdwr.pbd -> pbdwr220.pbd

pbdom.pbd -> pbdom220.pbd

pbuddi.pbd -> pbuddi220.pbd

The PB IDE will only support multi runtimes for the major version. No major version in the DLL names, just the PBD names.
