Hello all:

I have an issue with PB12.6 on my laptop. When I disconnect the laptop from his dock, disconnecting it from the wired network and connecting to the wifi network, then PB12.6 doesn't start anymore. Only appears the launching window, and remains there forever.

I have activated Syssam logs, because I suspect that maybe changing from the wired network to wifi, makes the MAC address to change, and then the lic file was not valid, but the syssam logs says that the license is valid.

The only workaround I found is to completely uninstall PB and install again, but this is very annoying.

Any clue about what it's avoiding PB to start normally?

Thanks in advance.

Javier

Hi Javier;

This is most likely due to your SYSAM license. Especially when its specifically generated to one of your MAC addresses. If the Sysam license is against your LAN Card's MAC address for example, when you un-dock your laptop the LAN card is disabled. Then your WiFi network card takes over. Of course, the MAC address on the WiFi does not match your Sysam license and thus your IDE is locked out.

When you generate your Sysam license, make sure that you register both MAC addresses or the one network card that would always be active.

You will be glad to know that this problem is not in Appeon PB as it no longer uses your MAC address and/or CPU ID like the old Sysam license model.   :-)

HTH

Regards ... Chris

Thanks for your response Chris.

When I first had this issue this is what I though it was happening. However, I enable the Sysam logs, and the logs says that the license was valid. This is the Sysam log:

I will try to use as MAC address to generate the license file the MAC address for the WIFI card. I have also read somewhere that the serial number for the hard disk can be used instead of MAC address.

In other order of things, we are currently using Appeon PB, but still there are a bunch of apps in PB12 that needs to be migrated, so I still need my PB12 IDE working :(

Thanks for your help

After several days, I think the issue is solved now.

I tried to generate the SYSAM license file using SERIAL_DISK instead of the MAC address, but the file was not accepted by Powerbuilder. Maybe I wrote a wrong syntax, but I was unable to make the license file work.

So I tried to generate the SYSAM license file using the MAC address from the WIFI adapter rather than the Ethernet card. So far Powerbuilder still works and I haven't had any issue, despite I have been undocking and docking the laptop several times, even with PB open (operation that I never did when I had the issue because that was blocking PB for sure)

In conclusion I would say that creating the SYSAM license file using the WIFI MAC address instead of the Ethernet MAC address has solved the problem.

Thanks to everyone for your answers.

what happens when you simply restart the machine when you are connected to just the wifi?

That used to happen in windows 10, then microsoft issued an update that fixed it.

the work around prior to that was to press the windows button and d to get to the desktop.  then go back to PB and you could work.

I haven't try to reboot the computer when connected to wifi.

The steps are the following:

- Before undocking the laptop, I close PB

- Undock the laptop

- Connect to wifi

- Work with the laptop, without opening PB while connected to wifi

- Back to dock, connect to wired network

When I try to open PB, the issue arise and only the splash screen appears. Once the problem arise, rebooting the computer doesn't solve the issue, the only workaround that works is to uninstall PB and reinstall again.

Next time I will try to open PB while connected to wifi, to see if opens or not.

Thanks for your answer

I also saw this behavior on Windows 8.x.

Somehow the splash window stayed on screen until a maximize happened in laptop mode.

It made opening the IDE a minute long hassle switching apps, switching desktop mode => laptop => Back to desktop - but it worked.

Thanks Kevin.

The name of the service is: "Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service"

I'm going to disable the service and try to start PB12

This looks like the issue with the touch screen/pad service causing the splash screen to stay open and freeze.  Not sure why it would work correctly when docked.  Anyway try turning off the service and see if it works.  You can google for the service name, I don't remember off the top of my head.
