Resolved Multiple simultaneous Appeon Release IDEs ?

Hi  

Currently a DEV can have multiple instances of the same release IDE open on their workstation

But

License server prevents running 2017 simultaneously with 2019

After we migrate our trunk code line to 2019 R2 all our Branch code will remain in 2017 R3 

There will be much lost productivity if we can only have one release IDE open at a time

 Question

How can a developer have a PB license that will allow different release IDEs to be simultaneously accessed?

Hi Yakov,

There is a trick to have 2017 and 2019 run at the same time:

Open two instances of PB 2017. Sign out from one instance. Open now PB 2019 and sign in.

PS: It also works in the reverse. Open 2x 2019 R2 - close 1 - Open 2017

At this point you have to buy an additional license, but we will offer special pricing for such situation.  Our best estimate is that PowerBuilder 2019 R3 license mechanism will be enhanced to tell the difference if multiple versions are running on the same machine or different machine, if same machine then allow you.  Please note if running on different machines you still need to buy multiple licenses even when we enhance the license mechanism in the future.

Yakov wants to use 2017 & 2019 at the same time. If I remember correctly, your prior version is older than 2017 so wouldn't be an issue. Where I work we are moving from 12.5 to 2019 GA so we don't have an issue with it.

could you clarify the pricing situation?

Will you still have to purchase different licenses after the license mechanism is updated?



Will this be dependent on the powerbuilder version or do you only have to change your backend?

Hi Ferdinand, When we make the change to the license mechanism in PowerBuilder 2019 R3, you would only need to purchase multiple licenses if you want to work on multiple machines without logging in and out. In other words, if you want to stay logged in on multiple machines at the same time then you still need multiple licenses. What we are changing is allow you be logged in to different versions on the same machine (not different machines) at the same time.

We were told that this was going to be addressed in R2; now apparently we'll have to pay for it.

We think it is better that we sometimes disappoint customers instead of say nothing about the product roadmap and keep customer completely in the dark! We understand it is disappointing, but we will definitely make this change just not as quickly as we had hoped.

Everybody here knows how difficult is to manage customer expectations, it's not about that, we all (I think) understand that... what's not clear to me (and that would actually be disappointing) is if we'd have to pay for an extra license just to be able to open PB vX and PB vY at the same time on the same machine...

From what I read in the forums this is a pretty common case, sometimes you need to compare code side by side and these projects are in different versions of PB... or you need to support the previous version of your application that was compiled (and requires patches) using the previous version of PB.

Hi Armeen,

Sounds like a vendor spec deficiency.   Why should customers have to pay?

In the meantime my management will likely not authorize additional licenses.

Hi Yakov, You don't have to pay if you don't want to. Rene has outlined a workaround. So purchasing additional license is if you want to avoid this hassle plus be properly licensed to use PowerBuilder on two different machines.
