Resolved What are the benefits upgrading to PB 2019?

Hi Appeon Support,

 

Just want to know what will be the benefits in upgrading our applications to PB2019 Standard edition?  We just recently migrated our applications to PB2017 R3 last year, so I don't know if we need to do another upgrade (unless,  PB2017 goes out of support?).

Hi Jeffrey, 

Since PowerBuilder 2019 R2 is right around the corner, I think you really should be deciding between 2017 R3 and 2019 R2 instead of 2019.

By upgrading to PowerBuilder 2019 R2, you will get expanded environment compatibility and may benefit from the features listed here: https://docs.appeon.com/appeon_online_help/pb2019r2/whats_new/index.html

On the other hand, PowerBuilder 2017 R3 is a long-term support version.  So while it lacks a bunch of new features, it gives you stability of many years of support.  Here is more info about the long-term support policy: https://www.appeon.com/products/eol-policy.html

Please note that our current plan is to make PowerBuilder 2019 R3 the next LTS version to replace 2017 R3.

Agree with Armeen on this one. You should consider LTS value of consistency in 2017 R3 against many new features like customizable themes; RIbbonBar control; newer DBMS support; etc.

Most value really depends.

I remember talking to some developers very happy with recent upgrade to MSSQL 2012! Because it is so "new" but also incredibly stable which is more important to their 24x7 business than smart new features of MSSQL 2019.

Stability is beautiful thing. We are on PB2017 R3 with MSSQL 2012 and are quite happy with the combo. We may upgrade to 2019 R3 when it comes out, but that is by no means a certainty.

To be perfectly honest I would stick with PB2017R3 as you are happy with that and then consider PB209R3 when that is available. Certainly that is our strategy for our core products.



However, we are developing using other interrim PB versions for one off bespoke developments where there is a clear advantage to the new features. This approach give us the best of both worlds and thank you to Appeon for allowing us the choice.

  Just an FYI that Appeon no longer offers the Standard Edition *. Also, the Cloud and Universal editions have been renamed to the "Professional" and "CloudPro" editions respectively.

* - The Standard Edition is discontinued, but since Appeon has a "grandfather pricing" policy, the existing Standard Edition subscribers can continue to renew at that level.

Support tickets have not gone up... same exact price as when we launched it initially year ago.

The "old customer" situation you described is basically hypothetical. If a customer really starts to use the features of a particular edition it is extremely rare situation they would downgrade and lose access to those features. This is confirmed by years of our sales data analysis.

Yes, new customers need to buy PowerBuilder with the more features of the Professional Edition, which includes a C# IDE in addition to the PowerScript IDE, the .NET implementation of DataWindow, and the ability to create Web APIs.

Thanks for clearing up my doubt on ticket pricing.

We at Credica are not "hypothetical", this is our exact situation: we've been paying 2 universal licenses and have come to the conclusion that we'll be fine by having one universal and one standard. A third person in our company would like to edit datawindows and wanted to buy another standard edition.



So ... Nothing hypothetical here, but thanks for taking your time to explain.

When Standard, Cloud, and Universal editions existed the choice was clear. Use (accumulatively) Standard to build traditional PowerBuilder applications, Cloud to build PowerBuilder cloud applications, and Universal to deploy PowerBuilder applications (either traditional or cloud based) as web applications. (Both cloud and web applications can be on the Internet or in an Intranet). To me, cloud is synonymous of Web APIs, not necessarily of web applications. But maybe the term is becoming more and more blurred to encompass both.
