OK, this seemingly minor issue has become a sticking point
for us automating the PowerClient deployment of an application.

From where is the text value of the displayed name of the application's
LNK/Shortcut on the client desktop derived?

  • Not from the "8" of the 8.3 executable's filename
  • Not from the target's file name
  • Not from the App Name on the PowerClient project's General tabpage
  • Not from the Product Name on the "Properties displayed for executable" group on the PowerClient project's General tabpage
  • Not from the application's name on the IIS host

Surely it's not from the "App path" in the "Advanced Options" tabpage in the customized "Package Cloud App Launcher"

Hmmmmmmm?

Thank you.

Hi John,

I remember you are using PowerBuilder 2021, so the application name on the desktop is derived from your project > Run Options > Customize app shortcut name. Please check it out.

What Ronnie said is the case in PowerBuilder 2019 R3, where customizing the app shortcut name is not supported.

Kai

Hi John,

It's derived from the URL string that you enter in the browser to perform the initial download and launch. I discovered this accidentally when I typed

something like "https://<host>/apPname" instead of "https://<host>/appname" in the URL, and the shortcut label showed up as "apPname"

Thanks for this obviously hard won knowledge, Ronnie.

Yeah, this'll be a boon to our customers who've not yet made the move to v2021.

Hi John;

Not sure if this is related but ....  In PowerClient and PowerServer Apps - please make sure that NO "periods" are used in the deployed App's name. I did that yesterday by mistake and it not only messed up my short-cut names it also gave me a 404.4 error when I tried to run the app.

Regards ... Chris
