Resolved Powerbuilder runtime question

I successfully migrated an application to Powerbuilder 2019 R3. I generated the Powerbuilder runtime MSI and it works well. I have noticed that the runtime files will get installed under either Common or Shared in the Appeon folder on different computers. Why is that? Is there a way I can make the MSI do it under just one folder regardless of the computer?

If you are on 2019 R3, there is option to use the PowerClient project type so it takes care of deploying the runtime for you instead of you managing that.  It also deploys your app, updates it automatically, and encrypts the PBD so your source code can’t be decompiled or hacked easily.  https://www.appeon.com/products/power-client

Yes, PowerClient is a feature of PB 2019 R3 and is available in Professional Edition or higher. There is no limit how many computers it can deploy to. Just do a quick test and I think you will fall in love with how this works compared to old way most customers deploy their client/server apps.

Nice! We will stick with SCCM for this release but I will definitely push my client to use Powerclient for the next release.

Hi Raymond;

  FYI: There is currently a ticket open on this issue. It seems to depend on when/how the PB Packager utility was installed. This then determines the "default" path & folder used to install the PB Runtime. The new XML file that the R3 compiler produces determines where the App EXE will look for the runtime. So for now, please make sure that when you run the PB runtime MSI install, that the install path & folder matches your XML file's expected location for the runtime or edit the XML file and adjust the PB runtime path accordingly.   HTH
