Hi,

why did you change the product names ?

In the past we had Appeon Universal; Workgroup Edition (including Web and Mobile)

Is this now "PowerServer Universal"?

Any further changes except the names?

TIA

Heino

There will be official announcement going out to existing customers in the near future to explain the changes, but we have decided to rename the product for two reasons:

1. People were confusing these products with PowerBuilder.  The full product name is Appeon for PowerBuilder Web and Appeon for PowerBuilder Mobile, which we've abbreviated as Appeon Web and Appeon Mobile.  As you can see, Appeon for PowerBuilder and Appeon PowerBuilder look almost identical.  The other thing is that "Appeon" is our company name and we wanted the product to have its own identity.

2. We wanted the name to highlight the server aspect of the product.  Historically, the product had both a developer toolkit and a server-side layer.  Now that PowerBuilder is under our control, the developer toolkit will simply be integrated in new versions of PowerBuilder, so all that customers are licensing separately from PowerBuilder is the server-side layer.

In terms of any changes, as I've already alluded the product packaging/installation will be different than before.  Starting from PowerServer 2017 and newer, we will no longer be providing a developer toolkit separate from PowerBuilder.  So customers that upgrade to PowerServer 2017 or newer will need to upgrade to PowerBuilder 2017 or newer.  PowerBuilder 2017 will be backwards compatible with Appeon Web/Mobile 2016 versions.

Yes, we will still continue the Developer Edition as before.  The only difference is that now it is just the server since the toolbar functionality is integrated into new versions of PowerBuilder instead of being separate add-on that is external to PowerBuilder.

You are right... we had fallen into same trap as Sybase.  Now that the product has its own distinct identity the challenge will be to get people used to the new name. ;-)
