Resolved Massive update datawindows definition

Hello everyone, not sure if this has been already answered, it is just my curiosity.

Is there a way or some tool to upgrade all the datawindows (and datastores) definitions after a migration from a pb version to new one?
I've noticed that the migration process itself doesn't touch the datawindows definition

The only way i know is to open every single dw one by one and just save it again.

Hi Simone;

  Yes, this has been a sore point since the days of PowerSoft. I raised various tickets to PS, Sybase, & SAP but this migration step never addressed.

The DWO source's "release" number will get updated when you make any DW change & then select "save".

You can write a small utility PB App using the LibraryDirectory, LibraryExport ( and some PowerScript text replacement code) & the LibraryImport methods to automate the DWO source update. When the LibraryImport command runs with the first line "Release nnn" updated to your current PB IDE version - the DWO compiler will then add all the missing new syntax for that PB version to the rest of the DWO source in the target PBL.

Hi, Simone -

Is there some problem/issue with not updating the internal version number in the .srd?

I suspect PB leaves DataWindow source untouched during a version upgrade for several reasons:

1. There's no need to make any changes. PB understands what features are available in each version and automatically initializes any newer, "missing" properties from an older version of the source. Having the version number embedded in the source makes it easy for the DataWindow Engine to identify which properties may not be present. PB objects, on the other hand, are different. They contain PowerScript code (a window, for example) that needs to be regenerated due to possible additions/deletions to internal mechanisms such as feature obsolescence and/or new features and those changes needing to be reflected in the pseudo-code that is contained in the PBL's.

2. By not having to change/update the source, the object's last-modified date/time value is not needlessly updated. This is important in some shops, such as ours. We want to know when any DW was last "touched" (updated) by an individual.

3. Older DW source is typically smaller because there are fewer properties explicitly called out in the source. For example, note the numerous gradient-related DWObject properties that are now present that did not exist in older versions.

As i mentioned before the only doubt i have is that older DWs are missing some of the new features or maybe are referencing some discontinued ones, so i was not sure if this would impact negatively or not. Thanks again!!

I've requested long time ago to Appeon to at least have the release version number to be updated when migrating, but for some reason that's not being done. Maybe to avoid version control problems.

there is no reason to change the release number. It would be a waste of time.

if you do use a feature from a new release then it would be needed, otherwise it will have no effect and should not have an effect.



Note that it is common for datawindow definitions to be stored in a database/file. Generally, for things like custom reports etc. They get loaded from text at runtime. These obviously do not get updated since they are not in pbls.

Never noticed that, some of mine have Release 6 and seem to work without issues.

Don't think it changes anything except if you open the DW with an earlier version than the release I guess.

Any missing properties in the source code will take on the default value when used at runtime or in the painter. There is really no reason to update them all to the current version.
