Hi,

When exporting an object, Powerbuilder places the sr* “apparently” in c:\Program Files (x86)\Appeon\Shared\Powerbuilder. At least that’s what you can see in the file save dialog. With explorer, it just didn’t exist. It took me ages to find it, but I eventually found it in C:\Users\Gerald\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Appeon\Shared\PowerBuilder\!

My question is why does Powerbuilder place the objects in such an obscure place?

Just curious.

Powerbuilder uses the default directory from the shortcut you ran it from. If you change the default directory in the shortcut, it will default to saving the exported files in that directory.

Once you've changed the directory in PB (from the file dialog), it will continue saving files into that directory until you change it again, or close PB (when you re-open, it will use the directory from the shortcut).

 

In thinking about it, a "Development Default Directory" would be nice addition to project properties. This would allow developers to have a different default directory set for every project (instead of having to remember to change it, have it pointing to the wrong place from a shortcut, or an earlier change of directory in PB prior to switching projects).

Thanks, I hadn't realised it used the shortcut directory. I have never checked the properties, just pinned it to Start :-/ I always change the location, but, as you say, the next time I open PB, back to the default.

That is done by Windows itself because Program Files is a secured area and you weren't running as administrator. PowerBuilder uses the system file saveas dialog which decided where to default to.

Just to add to what Roland said, it is a SaveAs dialogue, so it's not where PB puts it, it's actually where you put it, lol. You can always select another folder. I always keep my exports in a sub folder near the code folder or somewhere else easy to find that's not managed by GIT.
