Hi,

I know that JDBC connections were removed from PB. Since several customers of Appeon complained (us included), it was then decided to re-introduce this.

I hope it's a documentation problem, but if I look at the documentation for 2022 R2: https://docs.appeon.com/pb/whats_new/Discontinued_Obsolete_features.html and then click on Java ... https://docs.appeon.com/pb/upgrading_pb_apps/Removes_Java_support_and_JDK.html, it then clearly states that it will be removed (again!).

So, what's the deal? 90% of our customers use a Tibero database that we can only fully work with by using a combination of ODBC and JDBC connections.

Please clarify.

regards

MiguelL

Hi Miguel,

The JDBC file download link of PB2022R2 Beta 2693 is as follows:

https://file.appeon.com/download/APB/2022/JDBC_workaround_files_2022R2_2693.zip

https://file.appeon.com/download/APB/2022/sha256/JDBC_workaround_files_2022R2_2693.txt

For the time being, we have not received any notice of discontinuance of this workaround, and each release will provide the download of the corresponding version of the DLLs.

Regards,

Kitty

The doc mentions it was removed starting from version 2022 not R2.

The workaround should remain intact, otherwise in the PB upgrade guide it would be covered.

If your workaround doesn't work in the beta then you should treat this as a bug and open support ticket so we address it in the final release.

Hi Miguel;

Please test this with the R2 beta ASAP if you can as R2 uses VC++ 2022 whereas PB 2022 GA uses VC++2019

Tried to test ... but no available build of the workaround for any R2 beta testing.

Highest buld available is 1900, unless it's hidden somewhere else :)

Maybe we're lucky and the workaround keeps in place?

Hi Miguel;

Yes, all Java related features were removed in the previous PB release due to security exposure risk issues from the old Java runtime. There was a procedure released to retrofit the old JDK 1.6 back into the PB environment. However, installing JDK 1.6 does once again expose security risks. I have not heard anything official about PB 2022:R2 adding any Java support back at this time. We'll have to wait & see what engineering says.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for answering. That would be really ugly, as we were promised to get JDBC back (and we did) and now it's taken away?

I'll create a ticket with reference to this post, to get an official answer from engineering.

Okay, I've decided to go and try testing with the Beta for 2022 R2.

First of all I cannot find an updated build for 2022 R2 beta. https://www.appeon.com/developers/get-help/knowledgebase/4434#download

Will this work ? The beta is build 2693 and the latest available for the workaround is 1900.

According to https://www.appeon.com/developers/get-help/knowledgebase/4434

the workaround "will be updated for every major/revision release. Please remember to go back to this article to get the new files if later you need to upgrade to a newer major/revision version.".

A beta is NOT a major revision/release, so I guess that once again, I've wasted my time uninstalling 2022 and installing 2022 R2 Beta.

I know you'll tell me that "we no longer support JDBC", but I still find it odd that Appeon doesn't test this stuff themselves before telling anyone to "go and test the beta".

Thank you. Let me know if I'm wrong.

Wow, my ticket has been marked as "resolved".

After having been asked to test with 2022 R2 Beta by Armeen and Chris, and telling Appeon that I cannot test because there's no corresponding runtime for that release, Peter Pang from the land of Forever, says that "Ok it's resolved then".

I guess I'll just have to wait and see what the future brings when R2 GA comes out.

haha, ask me to test anything again!

best regards,

Captain Hook.
