Has anyone built a loan amortization schedule using a datawindow similar to what Excel does? Or seen an article they can point me to?

I have to modify an invoice, with a monthly late penalty. The finance dept gave me a spreadsheet that looks like a reverse amortization schedule. (Amount owed goes up instead of down. ) Looking into the Excel formulas, it is monthly compounding interest.

The invoice is already done in a dw, it is the penalty concept that is new, I am asking in the hopes that I can just enhance what I already have.

Hi Richard,

Problem with datawindow is: You can access values in columns from previous row but not from computed fields. But loan amortization schedule calculation needs to access calculated values from previous row.

If you don't want to do coding outside the datawindow you can only use one single row with a very large detail band for the whole schedule. You need computed fields for every payment period in this single row. This is very inflexible because you have to define a maximum number of periods at design time. And you will get problems to print the schedule.

So the best way is to do the calculation outside the datawindow and use datawindow only to show the result.

HTH,

René

Richard, can you elaborate how you envision this might work?

The DataWindow is a terrific tool for data entry and reporting, and even though it has some limited computational capabilities, it is not a spreadsheet.
