Resolved Best free J2EE server for Appeon Web?

I'm planning to start an evaluation of Appeon Web shortly. The plan is to have a test server on a Windows PC, but the production one on Linux. So I think that means we need to go with Apache with a J2EE server.

Am I right in seeing that JBOSS and Wildfly (which seems to be the newest version of JBOSS) are the only free options for the J2EE server? There's enough expense for Appeon that I'd really like to stick with a free J2EE option unless someone can tell me that it is MUCH worse (in terms of throughput, number of users it can handle etc.) than the commercial options.

Or wait ... just did some Googling ... one place said that while JBOSS is open source, you aren't allowed to use it for production without a support contract, and if I'm reading the stuff on https://partnercenter.force.com/s/MSRP-pricing right, that's very expensive. Does that match other folks' knowledge?

Or do I just use the free WildFly from http://wildfly.org?

Any thoughts or related experience? What about JBOSS vs. Wildfly? Thanks.

Hi Dan,

WildFly is simply the free version of JBOSS (they renamed it starting with version 10).  Since you don't want to spend any money I would go with WildFly.  We have many customers using it and no problems.  I've never actually installed it personally, so I can't say if their configuration management tool has an intuitive UI or not, but from a technology point of view to run Appeon Web apps it's no problem (or else we wouldn't have chosen it as a "supported" app server).

Thanks Armeen. At this point I think we have come to the conclusion to go with Windows/IIS instead - we know it better (not IIS, but Windows) and there's one less piece to install and learn about (the J2EE piece). Also one of your sales people said since .NET is the way you are moving more, it's probably a better choice. Please let us know if you disagree (like, if in your experience the J2EE version is MUCH more efficient at handling volume of users).

Hi Dan;

  Here is a good list of J2EE servers and their licensing status ( Click here ).

Note: Appeon currently only supports: EAServer, Oracle WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, JBoss, and JEUS.

          => Where of course, EAS is basically being EOL'ed by SAP.

FWIW: Before I joined Appeon I used WebLogic, JEUS & jBOSS  based J2EE  App Servers and Appeon Web. My best experience was with WebLogic for "ease of use" and production performance. Of course, WL is not free though.
