You'll need a customer database accessible from your web server. You can create a web service that takes in identifying information and verifies the customer licence, returning a result code to the application.

Hi Richard, When we looked into purchasing a third-party solutions rather than custom developing we had a hard time finding a popular or industry standard solution, and the few solutions that we started looking into were ridiculously expensive (perhaps because they don't have many customers).  In the end, we figured out we could deliver a better customer experience at lower cost if we just developed it ourselves.

     Appeon's on-line licensing mechanism for the PB, IM & PS products is a "built our own" solution. It's based on RESTful web services.
