Hi everyone,
Following up on the post I shared some time ago about upgrading legacy PowerBuilder applications, it’s looking increasingly likely that we’ll move forward with an upgrade to PowerBuilder 2022 R3.
Given how old some of our current versions still are, and the fact that not all decisions are finalized yet about what will be upgraded, refactored, or retired, I’m working in parallel on analyzing and documenting the existing applications to be better prepared when the upgrade actually happens.
As part of this, I’m looking into a tool called Visual Expert. My idea would be to use it mainly to:
- Identify which database tables are involved in each application
- Get a clearer picture of dependencies and overall structure
- Generate as much technical documentation as possible to support future refactoring
My question is this:
Do recent PowerBuilder versions (specifically PB 2022 R3) already include tooling that covers this kind of analysis and documentation, or does it still make sense to go directly with a specialized tool like Visual Expert?
I’ve also read some comments about requests or intentions to integrate Copilot into PowerBuilder. Do you see this as something realistic or already on the roadmap?
I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences or recommendations on this, especially if you’ve gone through a similar preparation phase before a major PB upgrade.
Thanks in advance!
Mark
