Has anybody run into issues with the latest 18.x version of MSOLEDBSQL (18.7.6) running under PowerBuilder 2022 R2? We've had a number of our application's clients inform us that after upgrading to MSOLEDBSQL 18.7.6, they get the following error when attempting to connect to the database:
"Session is not connected: [999] An error occurred, but error text could not be retrieved due to a failure in the error handler."
This is more of a curiosity since we have found two solutions to this problem, but I would like to know if anyone else has reported it and has determined what the underlying issue causing the error might be.
Our solutions are as follows:
- Upgrade to the latest version of our application which is running under PowerBuilder 2022 R3.
- I don't know why PB 2022 R3 fixes the issue, but we were able to reproduce the error reported by our clients using a version of our application running under PB 2022 R2. After uninstalling that version and then installing our latest version which uses PB 2022 R3, we could no longer reproduce the error.
- In looking at the New Features of PB 2022 R3, one of the things that stood out to me is that 2022 R3 supports .NET 8.0 whereas PB 2022 R2 only supports .NET 6.0. However, after further research, it turns out that the MSOLEDBSQL driver does not have a .NET dependency, so that should not be the underlying issue.
- Upgrade MSOLEDBSQL to 19.x (latest being 19.4.3).
- At least one of our clients reported success when implementing this solution.
- The reason we can't recommend this solution to all of our clients is due to the underlying differences between MSOLEDBSQL 18.x and 19.x. The 19.x version of MSOLEDBSQL requires fully signed certificates (higher security) whereas the 18.x version can use self-signed certificates. Many of our clients prefer to use self-signed certificates due to the added expense fully signed certificates incur.
