Hi Appeon Support Team,
We would like to report a DataWindow performance issue observed after upgrading our application from PowerBuilder 2017 to PowerBuilder 2022 R3.
Environment:
• Current Runtime: PowerBuilder 2022 R3 Runtime 22.2.0.3487
• Previously Used Runtime: PowerBuilder-2022-R3-LTS-3391-EN-MR
• Additional Runtime Tested: PowerBuilder 22.1.0.2819
• Legacy Version: PowerBuilder 2017
• DataWindow Type: Grid DataWindow displaying large volumes of data
Issue Description:
We have a DataWindow that displays a large amount of data with many visible columns. As the number of columns increases, we experience noticeable performance degradation while scrolling through records and updating data.
The issue is not observed consistently on every attempt, but it occurs most of the time and significantly impacts usability.
Observed Behavior:
• Slow and sluggish scrolling within the DataWindow.
• Delayed navigation when browsing records.
• Increased response time while updating data.
• UI becomes less responsive as the number of visible columns grows.
• Users experience browser performance degradation when working with larger datasets.
Expected Behavior:
Performance should be comparable to PowerBuilder 2017, where the same functionality works smoothly without noticeable delays during scrolling, navigation, or data updates.
Testing Performed:
We verified the behavior using multiple runtime versions:
• PowerBuilder 2022 R3 Runtime 22.2.0.3487 - Issue observed
• PowerBuilder 2022 R3 Runtime 22.2.0.3391 - Issue observed
• PowerBuilder 22.1.0.2819 - Issue observed
• PowerBuilder 2017 - No performance issue observed
Business Impact:
Users experience slow browser navigation and delayed updates when working with larger datasets and instrument lists. This impacts productivity and overall user experience.
Additional Information:
• Issue reproduced across multiple PB2022 runtime versions.
• Performance degradation seems to correlate with the number of visible columns in the DataWindow.
• The same functionality performs significantly better in PowerBuilder 2017.
Request:
Could you please help investigate this issue and advise:
1. Whether this is a known DataWindow performance issue in PB2022.
2. Whether there were any rendering or DataWindow engine changes between PB2017 and PB2022 that could affect performance.
3. Any recommended DataWindow settings, optimizations, or best practices for improving scrolling and update performance.
4. Whether any runtime patches, EBFs, or configuration changes are available to address this behavior.
5. Any profiling or diagnostic methods that can help identify the root cause of the slowdown.
We would appreciate your guidance on any potential solutions or recommendations to improve DataWindow performance in PB2022 R3.
Thank you for your support.
Regards,
Somit Kumar Bisoi
