Hi

I am evaluating the possibility to develop an application in PowerBuilder with connection to an SQL Server database to be able to run it on web browser on a tablet/smart phone.

We are using PowerBuilder 2019R2 with Microsoft SQL Server database.

Does anyone have experience of doing this in PowerBuilder? Does it work or is it better to develop in some other platform line .Net or Java etc?

What infrastructure is required for development and deployment?

What strategy should I follow? Is there any step by step tutorial?

Thanks for all the help

Regards

Vinay

Hi Vinay,

If you want to develop apps for iOS/Android, PowerBuilder does NOT support that.  You will need to use another UI technology, such as Vue, Angular, React, etc.  For the server-side, you could develop the business logic layer in C# using DataWindow technology so even though it is C# it has a lot of the benefits of PowerBuilder.  There is a recording of a presentation from Elevate 2020 conference that you might want to watch.

Best regards,
Armeen

Hi Armeen,

Thanks for your reply.

Basically I am interested in using our existing PowerBuilder resources to develop a desktop application which can be deployed on a server so that it could be accessed via a web browser on a iOS/Android tablet/smart phone. Is that possible via Power Server? How?

Regards

Vinay

No, sorry that is not possible. PowerBuilder/PowerServer only supports Windows devices. if you want iOS/Android compatibility, you need to use a different UI technology, such as Vue, Angular, React. The only thing you could use PowerBuilder for is develop business logic as REST Web APIs, which would be called by your mobile UI.

Is this feature planned for any future PowerBuilder release(s), if it's not available now ?

PowerServer 2021 is based on native PB for the UI so that will only be confined to Windows devices. For mobile devices, SnapDevelop will support non-PowerBuilder UI technologies. But it will be new development... not compiling existing PB app for iOS/Android. The roadmap for SnapDevelop is covered in the product roadmap page: https://www.appeon.com/developers/roadmap#upcoming
