Resolved Most stable version of PowerBuilder

Hello, we are moving from SAP PowerBuilder to Appeon PowerBuilder and would like some advice. In your opinion which version of Appeon PowerBuilder is most stable and reliable?

I use PB 2019R2  .. and it works totally stable :-)

Thank you everyone for your input! Your input has really helped. I was unaware that 2017 R3 was LTS. So I will go with that version.

If you look at the current PowerBuilder roadmap (https://www.appeon.com/developers/roadmap) at the bottom you'll see that PB2019 R3 may possible include new or enhanced minor features. Major or minor both are new features and are subject to errors until they are fully in use by the PowerBuilder community, bugs are reported and maintainance releases are issued. So I don't see GA, R2, or R3(LTS) as stable versions until MR1, MR2, MR3, etc. are issued for each one. I already expressed my concern that R3(LTS) versions don't get MR more than once or twice because bugs reported in those versions (R3(LTS)) are fixed but released in the next major version (e.g. PB2021), not in the current LTS version. In retrospect I see Appeon delivering major versions (PB2017, PB2019, PB2021) in three steps, GA, R2, and R3, the last one turning into Long Term Support. So, LTS doesn't equate to stable version. MR versions need to be released until it is EOL'ed.

My comment was with respect to this thread, most stable version of Powerbuilder. As a software developer, I expect that there are good chances of bugs being there in any incorporated new feature(s). And EBFs are good witness to this. By this, I don't intend to undermine Appeon's work in any way. I was happy to see some of the exception work in such a short period of time.



When you see my comment from the perspective of this thread, you will understand that I'm not pessimistic, in any way.

Every LTS version.   Currently 2017 R3.  

Merit is that No features are added thereafter which reduces the chance of new bugs.
Demerit being not even the existing bugs are fixed.  

From the point of view of stable release, go with LTS release(s).

We have all our production applications in PB2017R3(LTS) and will migrate to PB2019 until R3(LTS) is out (and after several MR versions are issued), as we have seen many reported issues over the R2 version, which is understandable since new features were introduced.

My only concern with LTS versions though is that bugs found in a later version are not automatically fixed in the last LTS version which seems kind of contradictory. You need to explicitly report the bug in the LTS version to have it fixed there. Maybe that's why we haven't seen a new MR build for PB2017R3 for a while.

We also recommend 2017 R3 for now, unless you really want to use some of the new features of 2019 R2. (which are greate).

Have a search of outstanding / open bugs on the standardsupport page, do an advanced search, specify version = 2019 R2 and click on search.

Read what's outstanding and decide.

Also, if you are thinking of using PB 2019R3, then i would start with 2017 R3 for the initial version.  then upgrade to 2019R3 when it comes out.

Generally speaking, a long-term support (LTS) version should be the most reliable, which currently is the PowerBuilder 2017 R3 version.  However, PowerBuilder 2019 is in its second revision (R2) so the quality is reasonably good.  The advantage of PowerBuilder 2019 R2 is that it offers many more features.  But of course let's see what real customers say.
