I have a question that I need some assistance solving.

An application I am working on requires that the PowerBuilder Datawindow argument entry window is popped up requiring the user to enter the parameters for the retrieval process.

One of the parameters is a string, however, the string entry field does not accept special characters such as ! (Exclamation).

Is there a setting or definition field somewhere in the IDE that will allow this character to be entered as part of the string in this field.

Thank you

Interesting!

The other special characters appear but "!" does not.
Single quotes work, double quotes do not.

Even inside quotes the BANG (!) will not display. Something about SHIFT-1 simply does not work when providing manual input to a string field in a DW.
I wonder if it is because SHIFT-1 has been redirected, usually to HELP.

I think you should open support ticket.

As workaround I think the only way is to write your own Dialog. :-(

Yes, very interesting. One would think after all the iterations of PowerBuilder over the last 30 years someone would have raised this issue before and maybe they have, but I don't recall it ever being mentioned. Then again...and not to minimize your issue William...maybe there hasn't been much need, if any, to use the exclamation/ bang or double-quote characters when specifying retrieval arguments. The oldest version of PB I can quickly spin up is PB8 and those characters can't be entered in that version either.

Also thought maybe you could get around it by typing the ASCII codes (ALT+0033 and ALT+0034 respectively) but they don't work either.

that is such an ugly screen that i believe most developers have written their own instead of using that default one.
