Hello,

(probably someone from Appeon should answer this question)

On your website "Installation Guide of SnapDevelop (PB Edition) 2019" you have listed this as requirements:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.1 SDK

  • Microsoft .NET Core SDK 2.1.6

What's your plan to support the latest versions of .NET in SnapDevelop?

Looking at the Microsoft website the latest versions are .NET Core 3.0 and .NET Framework 4.8.
They are supported by the latest version of Visual Studio.
Obviously I understand that it may take longer for you to do the same with SnapDevelop but it would be good to know what's your plan to keep it up to date.

Regards,
Marcin

Per our announcement at Elevate 2019, .NET Core 3.1 support is planned for PowerBuilder 2019 R3: https://youtu.be/LrI4i7zwDm0?t=118

You're very welcome. I recommend you start with PowerBuilder 2019 R2 so that you can share with us your ideas for enhancements to make in R3 and address important bugs, if any exist that affect your project.

Hi Marcin,

.NET Core 2.1 is currently most recent Long-Term Support version of .NET Core. I therefore expect also PB 2019 R2 will be based on .NET Core 2.1.

Next .NET Core LTS version according to Microsoft is .NET Core 3.1 - which hasn't been released yet.

To me the important part is:

  1. Current LTS version of .NET Core
  2. SnapDevelop also support .NET Standard 2.0 class libraries

I'd expect someone from Appeon also chips in.

HTH /Michael

Thanks Michael.

According to MS website .NET Core 3.1 LTS is scheduled for December 2019 so maybe the SnapDevelop which will be released in Q1 2020 will support it?

Not that I need any specific 3.0 features now but if I would be starting a new WEB API project in Visual Studio then I would choose this version. For this reason I would like to know what's the Appeon's plan for SnapDevelop tool.

My guess is .NET Core 3.1 slated for PB 2019 R3 because that is expected to be the LTS version of PB 2019.

And if I remember correctly next .NET version (Core + Framework brands disappear) = .NET 5.0 won't be LTS, instead .NET 6.0 will and then even number .NET version scheduled for every 2 years. MS has blog posts etc. on this topic.

If you look at Elevate keynote sessions on YouTube I believe Armeen discusses the .NET Core direction for PB + SnapDevelop.
