Because IE is not secure anymore, I developed an embedded browser in Powerbuilder, based on Webview2.

Security patches will automatically be installed via Windows updates. I think that is a good thing, because there are often security patches.

Now PB 2019 R2 has an embedded CEF browser. I was wondering if I have to wait until een new PB version is released for the latest security patches in Chromium, or are security patches possible without updating the PB version.

Hi Kees,

The way we deliver updates to the WebBrowser control is same as any other feature of PowerBuilder.  You need to apply the appropriate maintenance release (MR).

And yes, Miguel is correct that PowerBuilder 2019 R3 will release on Monday (January 25th), and that we can release MRs faster now that we have separated the runtime from the IDE.

You should be aware that PowerBuilder 2019 R3 gets enhancements to the WebBrowser control and newer version of the engine.  Also, PowerBuilder 2019 R3 is a long-term support version.  I strongly recommend you upgrade.

Best regards,
Armeen

Hi Armeen,

Thanks for you reply.

I am curious to see how 2019 R3 works for me.

I think I have to wait until the 25th, because I am not able to download the beta version of R3.

Maybe, because we have a Powerbuilder Standard subscription?

Beste regards,

Kees

Hi Kees,

Nice, I thought about doing something similar like a year ago, but luckily Appeon came up with it's CEF, so I don't have to worry about that anymore. Isn't webview2 also based upon CEF?

There'll be a new release of 2019 R3 on Monday the 25th if I understood well.

I don't think the Appeon version will automatically update through windows, as they are a subfolder somewhere in the shared libraries.
I do know that from now on, it will be easier (faster?) for Appeon to release any MR, since the IDE no longer depends on the runtime.

Hi Miguel,

Thanks for you reply. Ik see that the CEF-browser also supports executing javascript, which I need (and had implemented in the Webview2 browser, based on the Microsoft Edge Chromium browser). That can be an extra reason using the PB embedded CEF browser.

I'd like to try the beta version of 2019 R3, but I can't download that version. Maybe, because we have a Powerbuilder Standard subscription.

Best regards,

Kees

Yw, Yes I would definitely go with Appeon's version. It's not perfect yet, but Appeon listens to their users and any enhancements can be requested for. I did not find it stable enough personally (yet), It worked sometimes and sometimes not at all without changing any code, so I decided to wait. Maybe I was doing something wrong.

Yes I think the Beta is the full version. You should be able to download R3 next week.
