Hi all,

 

We are experimenting on using rich text edits in our program, when we had a question about which data type can rich text edit uses. I tried to search up some articles but did not find a definitive answer and was hoping someone on here as the answer. We are not sure if we should use a TEXT field or VARCHAR(MAX) field to contain our rich text field. We are using a Microsoft SQL Server.

Hi, Kevin -

Use a database data type that can hold a variable amount of character data. There is no recommended size, because the size requirement depends on the amount of text a user will enter. Keep in mind that information in RTF format contains extra "behind-the-scenes stuff" in order to be able to describe and reproduce the text formatting in addition to the actual text content.
