Hello all,

I'm using PowerBuilder 2019 R3 on Windows 10 Pro v21H2.  Clicking on File on the main PB menu, then Printer Setup, then choosing one of the printers listed, then clicking the Setup button seems to fail.  Nothing displays.  Seems to hang for about a minute then frees up but does not display the print dialog.  Other apps open this fine (e.g. Notepad).  I've tried updating printer drivers, uninstalling/reinstalling printers, rebooting with no luck.    Has anyone run into this before?  Have any ideas?

Thanks!

Ted

Chris,

I really appreciate you're replies here, thanks.  Well, I finally resorted to uninstalling and reinstalling PowerBuilder and all is good now.  Weird.

Thanks again!

Ted

Well I guess I didn't resolve it.  It's happening again today.  I have deleted all printers, uninstalled all printer drivers and reinstalled them.  I have 3 symptoms and they all seem to me to be related to PowerBuilder's inability to get printer/printer driver information from Windows.  Symptoms are 1.) In the IDE from the menu choosing Printer Setup then clicking the Setup button it seems to hang for several seconds then never opens the printer properties for any selected printer, 2.) opening a datawindow to edit takes about a minute for the designer to display - this is with any datawindow be it simple or complex and regardless of type, 3.) in the datawindow designer after retrieving data and previewing, going to File - Print Preview displays the message, "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup."  A better understanding of what call(s) PowerBuilder makes to retrieve printer driver information may help me troubleshoot printer driver configuration issues.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts, help on this.

Ted

Hi Ted ... I wonder if a recent W10 update has created this issue? Are any other PB Developers in your organization having this printer issue?

Chris,

I  believe I've resolved it, at least for now.  Don't know the cause but I suspect corrupted entries in the area of the registry that store printer information.  After installing a new printer I am now able to access the printer properties dialogs from Printer Setup again.

Thanks for the quick responses!

Hi Chris,

Yes this is straight from within the PowerBuilder IDE (Version 2019 R3 Build 2728) accessed from the menu via File | Print Setup then clicking the Setup button.  No RDP or Citrix involved.  Just straight Win 10 Pro on a laptop.  This just started happening the last couple days.

Thanks!

Ted

Thanks Ted!

Are you running the PB IDE "As Admin"?

Also, does a compiled App ExE behave the same as well on your IDE machine?

Hi Ted;

Are you running the App from the IDE or via it's compiled EXE?

Are you running through RDP or Citrix?

Regards ... Chris
