Hi All/Appeon Staff,

We use Powerbuilder Universal for developing a mobile app solution, which is deployed on an internal Powerserver Server for use within the organisation.  This Powerserver is licensed using one of the 3 Production licenses associated with our Appeon Enterprise Account.  In other words it is using the PB Powerserver (Mobile).

I have just upgraded the Powerserver using the Appeon PB 2017 R3 Build 1880 update.  I will also be updating our development PCs to the same PB build in order to be able to redeploy our Apps.  We were hoping to be able to make use of some of the major new features in Powerserver but I have checked the appeon_workarounds & appeon_cordova pbls in the '\appeon\developTempFile' folder after the upgrade and they have not been updated, so I assume that the PB version is not on the same feature path as the GA version.

  • What are the differences between the PB version of Powerserver and the current Powerserver 2019 GA release?
  • Does the PB Powerserver build 1880 have the same new major features as Powerserver 2019?
  • What new features are included in the Build 1880 release of Powerserver?
  • Will we need to wait for Powerbuilder 2019 release on 31st May to get the New Features (SQL Server 2017, iOS 12, Android 8 & 9 support)?

Thanks

Michael

Hi Michael,

1. What are the differences between the PB version of PowerServer and the current PowerServer 2019 GA release

New features added in PowerServer 2019: https://www.appeon.com/support/documents/appeon_online_help/ps2019/new_features_guide/ch01.html

2. Does the PB Powerserver build 1880 have the same new major features as Powerserver 2019?

No, PowerServer build 1880 corresponds to PowerServer version 2017.

3. What new features are included in the Build 1880 release of Powerserver?

Mainly bug fixes and the ability for PowerBuilder 2017 R3 to deploy to PowerServer 2019 (Non-PB Edition) Servers.

https://www.appeon.com/support/documents/appeon_online_help/pb2017r3/release_bulletin_for_pb/bug_fixes.html

4. Will we need to wait for PowerBuilder 2019 release on 31st May to get the New Features (SQL Server 2017, iOS 12, Android 8 & 9 support)?

Yes, on this date, the PowerBuilder 2019 installation package will be released, on that package will be included the PowerServer 2019 (PB Edition) installation package. You don't have to update your PowerBuilder version to 2019, you can choose to only update your PowerServer (PB Edition) to 2019. If you are on an absolute hurry to test out PowerServer 2019 now, please email sales@appeon.com for a possible workaround.

Cordially,

Mariano C.

Dear Mariano,

Thank you for your reply. It has helped to answer my queries.

Is there a reason why the feature-set for Powerserver PB Edition lags behind the Non-PB Edition? Would it not make sense that the PB Edition match the Non-PB Edition following PB updates.

Are there plans to have both versions on the same release schedule for the future?

Regards

Michael

Hi Michael,

It's not that Appeon is limiting the PB Edition of PowerServer intentionally. Appeon usually releases PowerServer version updates for PB and Non-PB Editions on the same date. The original plan was to release PowerBuilder 2019 (with PowerServer 2019 PB Edition included) and PowerServer 2019 (Non-PB Edition) on the same date. However, because PowerBuilder 2019 was delayed, the included PowerServer 2019 (PB Edition) package was delayed as well, yet PowerServer 2019 (Non-PB) Edition was released.

Once PowerBuilder 2019 is released it will include PowerServer 2019 (PB Edition) which will have the same new features as PowerServer 2019 (Non-PB Edition). In the future, the intention is to again sync the release dates of PowerServer PB and Non-PB Editions, however, delays may always occur.

That's great news Mariano,

Thank you for explaining.

Looking forward to PB 2019 release later this month.
