Hi,

I've got a new machine, Windows 10 Version 21H2. I installed PowerBuilder 2019 R2 Build 2353. When I try to connect my projects to Microsoft Visual SourceSafe, PB crashes with no message.

Steps:

1. Open Workspace

2. Open Library Painter

3. Right click on workspace, choose Properties

4. Go to Source Control tab

5. Choose Microsoft Visual SourceSafe as the Source Control System

6. Click elipses next to Project

7. Enter User name, password and Database, Click Ok

8. Select SourceSafe location of the project, Click Ok

* here everything looks normal, tab is filled in properly

9. Click any of Apply, Connect or Ok

* after a few seconds, PB just disappears. Go back in and nothing is saved. The following shows in the event viewer:

I re-installed the plug-in and still got the same results. I did find a work-around:

1. Open Workspace

2. Open Library Painter

3. Right click on workspace, choose Properties

4. Go to Source Control tab

5. Choose Microsoft Visual SourceSafe as the Source Control System

6. Rather than setting up the project, just click Ok on the window

7. I got a couple error messages and prompts, just go through them

8. The Output window shows Source control is in offline mode

9. Right click on workspace, choose Properties

10. Go to Source Control tab

11. Set up the project

12. Click Connect button

Everything now works normally for the workspace and Visual Source Control. It's so weird.

Hi John .. I suspect that the "stored" VSS setting information was incorrect and then in your round-about-way, the VSS settings were finally updated correctly (in the MS-Windows registry). I am super glad that you finally have this working. We still have a few customers on VSS - even with PB2021 - and they had no connection issues. I agree ... very weird.

Can you replicate this on another machine?  That may help rule out some environment/config issue with your particular machine.

Then it doesn’t seem it is config issue of the VSS server or incompatibility between PB 2019 and VSS. Most likely something corrupted on your machine. Are you sure all the settings/config the same as the machine that works?

Hi Chris,

I tried running as Administrator just now with the same results, PB vanishes.

I am able to run the Visual SourceSafe executable and connect to the same database.

Thanks!

Hi John ... thanks for trying those suggestions!

If you go to the development PC that is working OK with VS and compare the VS settings in that PB IDE to your new machines PB IDE .. are they exactly the same? Also, is the VS client installed on the new machine the same version as on the old PB IDE machine?

Same version of MS Visual SourceSafe. Settings appear to be the same between the two. Is there a plugin required to get the Source Control System populated with VSS? Or are there possibly VSS files I need to remove from the folder?

Hi John ... Yes, there is a VSS client plug-in. The PB IDE only displays the SCC modules that registered in the MS-Windows registry. However, it does not check that that software is actually installed until you try to connect to a repository. If the VS client software was not completely installed or has been corrupted somehow, this might cause your GPF. The next suggestion I would like to propose is that you try reinstalling the VSS Client again and then re-test.

Regards ... Chris

Hi John;

  1. Did you try running the PB IDE "As Admin"
  2. Can you connect OK to VS using it's client own tool(s)?

Regards... Chris
