I have an instance of "Oracle Express XE 18" loaded on a desktop.

Using this desktop -

I am able to connect to that XE with Oracle Developer, SQL+ and Toad - proving the validity of my tnsnames.ora and authentication protocols

I am NOT able to connect to that XE with PowerBuilder. When I attempt a connection I get error message: oerr ORA 28040 "No matching authentication protocol". PowerBuilder is able to connect to other external server resident Oracle databases, but not the local desktop resident Oracle Express XE.

Other likely pertinent information:

1. I have been using PowerBuilder for 20 years but recently upgrade to Appeon's version in order to migrate to Win10.
2. This is the first time PowerBuilder has been loaded on this particular desktop.
3. This is the first time I have tried to connect PowerBuilder to an Oracle Express instance

Is there some trick to connecting to an Oracle Express?

After some more work I am now getting a different error:

Please connect as the PowerBuilder Catalog Owner. This is necessary for the initial connection to Oracle to GRANT provileges on the repository.

What/who is the PowerBuilder Catalog Owner. I am unfamiliar with that term.

Hi Randy,

Please click the System tab in the Database Profile Setup page, input your username in the PowerBuilder Catalog Table Owner field and then try again.

Please refer to the following links:

Hi Randy;

I am also using O18C Express on my PC's. After installing the O18C server, I then also installed the O18C client. After that, I had no problems connecting to O18C from either 2017R3 or PB2019.

Note: I am using the O18C "Instant Client" (my favourite).  ;-)

Tip: Install both the 32bit & 64bit client drivers as the IDE will require the 32bit O18C client but,  64bit App EXE's and PowerServer (O18C works great from there too) will require the 64bit one.  ;-)

HTH

Regards ... Chris

Are you using PowerBuilder 2019 R2 or PowerBuilder 2017 R3 MR 1915?  These are the only two versions of PowerBuilder that have been tested with and officially support Oracle 18/19.
