I spent some time this evening composing some technical questions in a Word document for PowerBuilder developer candidates. There is a section containing general PowerBuilder questions and a section containing DataWindow questions. I started a PFC section but ran out of time... I will complete this in the next couple of days.

The zipped preliminary document is attached.

I have finished preparing a Word document that contains suggested interview questions for prospective PowerBuilder developers. It contains 30 questions on general PB topics, 16 questions on DataWindows, and six PFC-related questions.

I hope you find these questions useful in your candidate search.

Best regards, John

Addendum:

I'm including the following URL which should allow you to download the Word document from my Google Drive:

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ytccTsVYbSfLB1WT-PtP3h2lJtdw8Jpo/edit?usp=drive_link&ouid=100601483811178537991&rtpof=true&sd=true

This was necessary because the Q&A site will not upload the zipped document and show it in this post.

Hi, Gaurang -

Although there are many simple, basic PB questions that can be asked, if it was me in your position, I'd want to ask some questions that would reflect a candidate's ability to successfully maintain MY application. I and others here can probably give you some interview questions (and answers, I suppose ;-)), but first I have a few basic questions for you regarding your PB environment and application:

What version/release of PB are you using? Will you be migrating the app to a newer or latest version?

What version(s) of Windows is being used to host/run the application? Is the app deployed on a Citrix server?

Is the app deployed as a 32-bit app or as a 64-bit app?

Does the app create/send email? Create PDF's (reports)?

Is the application built upon an object framework, such as PowerBuilder Foundation Class (PFC) or Standard Tool & Die (STD)? If not, is there any object inheritance used?

Does the app utilize any Windows API functions or third-party Dynamic-Link Libraries (DLL's)?

Best regards, John

Hi, John -

Although there are many simple, basic PB questions that can be asked, if it was me in your position, I'd want to ask some questions that would reflect a candidate's ability to successfully maintain MY application. I and others here can probably give you some interview questions (and answers, I suppose ;-)), but first I have a few basic questions for you regarding your PB environment and application:

What version/release of PB are you using? Will you be migrating the app to a newer or latest version?

We have PB 2019 , yes migrate with improvements

What version(s) of Windows is being used to host/run the application? Is the app deployed on a Citrix server?

Win 11 -- Not on Citrix , on users Desktop , with Oracle databse in AWS cloud

Is the app deployed as a 32-bit app or as a 64-bit app?

32- Bit

Does the app create/send email? Create PDF's (reports)?

No

Is the application built upon an object framework, such as PowerBuilder Foundation Class (PFC) or Standard Tool & Die (STD)? If not, is there any object inheritance used?

PFC object inheritance used

Does the app utilize any Windows API functions or third-party Dynamic-Link Libraries (DLL's)?

No third-party Dynamic-Link Libraries (DLL's) , Windows API functions --- most likely Not.

Thank You,

Gaurang

Employ them on 3 month trial, they should be able to complete a small project effectively in that time.
