Hello,

I have installed PowerBuilder 2017 R3 Build 1858, however since the databases I am using are SQL Server, I do not have SQL Anywhere installed.  I would now like to review the sample app installed with PowerBuilder, but I also need the sample database.  How can I set up the demo database after already having installed PowerBuilder?

TIA,

Ted

Hi Ted;

   I would proceed as follows:

  1. Install SQL Anywhere free "Developer" edition (from SAP)
  2. Uninstall PowerBuilder and PowerServer (if you are using the "Universal" edition)
  3. Reinstall PB2017R3.
  4. When prompted to install the PB Demo DB to SA - accept
  5. When prompted to install the PS Demo DB to SA - accept ("Universal" edition)

HTH

Regards ... Chris

Hi Lawrence;

Yes, the free "developer" SA 17 version you have installed will work just fine for this Fundamentals Course.

FYI: I am now just re-doing the Fundamentals course and the next version will be use the PostgreSQL DBMS instead,

Thanks Chris. We just ignored the warning and installed with the demo database anyway, I assume all things will be fine but hope to update in an edit the results. I would suggest the warning being rephrased if there aren't truly issues installing the demo database, but I assume your redo of the course will likely be timely enough that it wouldn't be prudent to update the installer.

The warning is only about an issue with Stored Procedures not working properly in SA 17.0.4.2053. That DBMS issue is fixed in higher MR's but you are correct, you need a paid SP maintenance account to get to them. However, the Fundamentals course does not use SP's - so you are "good to go" in that respect!

Also, I am the one that created the current version of the course, so if you have any suggestions on making it better (since I am building the next version) - please feel free to send me your ideas! ;-)
