A couple questions:

Will the PB 2021 IDE be able to choose PB 2019-R3 builds that are installed?

What is the projected release timeframe?

The roadmap for 2021 doesn't mention any improvements to the desktop. Are there any notable changes/improvements in the pipeline that would be for the desktop?

Hi Roland;

1) Yes, you can already build / deploy R3 App's from the PB2021 beta IDE.

2) No specific release date yet. We just started the 1st public beta and will need to see what feedback we get from that first.

3) PB2021 will primarily be focused on only PS2021 interaction functionality. PB2022 will address new PB features.

Hi Roland,

Yes, in the PB 2021 IDE you will be able to compile for PB 2019 R3 or for PB 2021.  This was feature change we made to the IDE to support multiple runtimes starting in PB 2019 R3.  Please refer to this table: https://docs.appeon.com/pb2019r3/whats_new/ch01s01s03.html

The projected release is this summer.  At this point, can't give you exact date because the final release date will depend on how the current beta cycle goes.

Aside from supporting PowerServer 2021, PB 2021 has a new standalone compiler for doing automated builds called PBAutoBuild.  This is documented in the roadmap page so we have delivered exactly what we stated: https://www.appeon.com/developers/roadmap

Compared to previous standalone compiler, it can do some ORCA stuff like getting the source code from source control. But probably its biggest advantage is that it supports the new PowerClient deployment option for client/server, which is really gaining popularity as better way to deploy client/server apps.  And of course, it supports PowerServer 2021 compilation.  Here is the beta documentation about this new feature: https://docs.appeon.com/pb2021/whats_new/Building_your_PowerServer_project_with_commands.html

One of the problems I found with the powerclient, is that now every folder (resources, etc.), has to be a subfolder of the main app's folder. We don't have that structure and use relative paths. Nothing we can't fix, but surely something to take notice of.

Hi Miguel,

Having every folder (resources, etc.) as a subfolder of the main app's folder can help make sure all the functions can still work well after the web deployment. Our team is aware that this restriction has caused some inconvenience. They will check whether there is anything they can do later to turn it around.

Best regards, Julie

Hi Julie,

Okay that's great, though it's not a big problem. Just a change we'll have to do and that will take some time.
