I saw an email on the old PowerGroups that said:
"Really sad that Appeon is EOLing Mobile development."

Is this correct or just a bad rumor?
If it's nonsense I want to gently correct them.
If it's real I'd like to know for sure.

Thanks,
Olan

Hi Olan,

Appeon is definitely not giving up on mobile.  Next year we plan to add support for developing apps with Angular UI, and thereafter we are considering React, Flutter, among a couple other options.

But the newer versions of PowerServer will no longer support iOS/Android.  PowerServer was never about developing mobile apps but rather converting existing desktop apps.  Tablets like iPad was the main driver for us to add support for iOS/Android to PowerServer back in 2016.  But over last several years not many customers converted their existing desktop apps to tablets, at least not to iOS/Android tablets.

On the other hand, by PowerServer discontinuing support for iOS/Android we can greatly improve the product for Windows OS.  It would support nearly all PB features, requiring almost no work to convert apps, and perform much faster.  Here is a whitepaper about the technology change coming to PowerServer 2021: https://docs.appeon.com/whitepapers/Whitepaper_Deploying_PowerBuilder_Apps_to_the_Cloud.pdf

So long story short, we are fully committed to the PowerServer product as well as introducing new options for mobile app development.  But our direction for mobile app development will be with mainstream mobile UI technologies and cloud architecture.

Best regards,
Armeen

Great to get this clarification. Thanks, Armeen.

This does sound like good focus of Appeon's developer, support, and sales resources.

Chris -

Thank you for the quick response!

Next, can you please translate the link you provided for those of us dummies that have been doing nothing but Client/Server and have no idea what the exlpanations on the link actually mean.

To me the questions are really simple:
1)  Will we still have the ability to create iOS and Android apps in the future using a PB code base?

2)  Will we still have the ability to create cloud apps in the future using a PB code base?

2)  Will we still have the ability to migrate existing PB client/server apps to the cloud in the future?

Thank You,

Olan

1. Yes, and no. You can NOT convert the UI of your PB code base, but you CAN use PowerScript Migrator to convert the business logic of your PB code base to REST APIs that can be consumed by whatever mobile UI technology you choose. The REST APIs are powered by the .NET DataStore, so you will see the source code is quite similar to your PB code base. https://www.appeon.com/sites/default/files/products/RapidSharp/port.png?fid=0721

2. Yes, you can for Windows OS devices, e.g. desktops, laptops, surface tablets, etc. You can 100% code with PowerScript, DataWindows, and PowerBuilder IDE. PowerServer 2021 would support nearly all PB features, including all the new stuff Appeon added in last few years.

3. Same answer as #2.
