Resolved Weird setup step for PowerServer

The readme for PowerServer has a section at the bottom that has you add a Module Mapping in IIS Manager to f*.

This seems like a weird requirement. If you also host a static HTML website on the server and one of the pages starts with f, it will prompt to download instead of displaying it.

It would seem that sticking to file extension mapping would be a better choice.

Can someone explain this requirement in detail?

Hi Roland,

As Chris mentioned, this is used when the App is deployed using the "Merge Files" option (Toolkit > configure > Application profile > Mics Settings > Performance settings). In this case, the file f* without file extension will be generated. If you didn’t used this option, please ignore this section.

By default, the Web server running on IIS 7.5 or later versions does not allow the following two types of files to be downloaded to a browser:
1 Files with file extension, but not specified in IIS.
2 Files without file extension.

Therefore, you would need to explicitly define these file types in IIS. Please refer to the article below for details:

The merge files should have been given a file extension. Is it possible to define the mapping so that it only picks up files that start with f and don't have an extension?

We don't have a feasible workaround for this currently. But we will record it as a requirement in our CR pool, thanks for your valuable suggestion.

Hi Roland;

  I believe that this is used when the App is deployed using the "Merge Files" option. However, that is just my best guess as I have not needed this setting before for the Web Apps that I have deployed into production.

  I will get one of the PS specialists to respond to your question for a 100% accurate answer to your great question!

Yes, it is used for merge files which are used for performance.



The question is really why do these merge file not use an extension. If they did, then we wouldn't map every file that starts with an f, but rather just files that start with F and end with some extension (.merge perhaps??)
