Guys, at some point our company may upgrade to PB 2019. We're currently at PB 12.1, and our licenses are administered on a server. Are served licenses restricted to specific versions, or can PB 12 and PB 2019 use the same?

Hi Scott;

   The PB 12.x licenses would still be using the old SYSAM licensing system that was implemented by Sybase and still enforced by SAP today.

   When Appeon took over PB from SAP in 2016, we implemented a new licensing system that does not use SYSAM. It is totally different and thus, does not interfere with the SYSAM system (PB 12.x versions). So you can then run PB 12.x, PB2017(for that matter) & PB2019 all on the same PC.

   The new Appeon PB license system comes with either an off-line and on-line model. Like SYSAM, you could install the license locally on your PC (we call that off-line) or have it hosted (what we call on-line). For the on-line alternative, it is an Appeon Internet based server that hosts the license file and the IDE just checks that at start-up or if the IDE is running continually, every 5 days.

HTH

Regards ... Chris

Adding to what Chris said and directly answering your question about version restrictions, your served licenses are restricted to PB 12.  You would need to purchase a subscription from Appeon to get PB 2017 and newer.  Once on a subscription, you can freely use any version Appeon has released.

Upgrading to newer version of PB gets you all of these new features: https://www.appeon.com/developers/powerbuilder-release-history.html

But I think the most important and basic benefit of upgrading is being on a supported version.

And this page helps you understand how upgrading to the newer version works and answers FAQs: https://www.appeon.com/products/power-builder/migrating-to-pb.html
