Resolved Running two IDEs at the same time

I just set up a server for testing the beta.

Our current version is PB 2019 Build 2170. We are hoping tp skip R2/R3 and convert to 2021 for our Jan 2022 release.

I was under the impression that a change was made to allow for running two IDEs at the same time but when I ran PB 2019 Build 2170 and PB 2021 Beta at the same time, it gave the usual error message.

Hi Roland;

  I see your problem ... you need to be on PB2019 R3, which is build 2670 or higher. Your PB IDE build 2170 is not R3, it's the original 2019 GA release (no R2, no R3).

Hi Roland;

   We have already had reports that the PB/PS2021 install and use can negatively affect PB2019R3. While they can be started together (I can on my test PC), the PB2021 IDE can step over top of R3's. Uninstalling the IDE's can even lead to reinstall issues on both versions.

  Please remember that this is still an early beta vs PB2019R3 which is "production". I would not recommend at all installing & using PB2021 on an PB2019R3 installed machine at this time. Please install & use PB2021 only on a clean test PC or VM for now.

We aren't using 2019-R3 because it screws up earlier versions of 2019 on the pc such that they can no longer be used. If we move to a newer version, we have to be able to support the prior one as well.

When we moved from 12.5 to 2019 last year, all our customers had to upgrade InfoMaker. If we updated to R3, I think it would be a hard sell to get them to upgrade again when the version number is the same.

Hi Roland,

Two major versions of the IDE are supported to be used side-by-side.  Beta versions however are likely to have bugs or things that are work in progress, which can cause the problem you ran into it.  It is for this reason we never recommend to install betas on your real/production environments.  Please help us to open a support ticket so we can make sure the final release doesn't have this issue.

As far as skipping PB 2019 and going straight to PB 2021, I don't recommend you do this unless you want to use PowerServer.  PowerServer is the only new feature of PB 2021 while PB 2019 R3 gets you long-term support.  Per our product roadmap, PowerBuilder 2022 and its revisions are what will get significant new features for client/server projects.

This isn't a production environment for PowerBuilder. The server is primarily for Visual Expert. I was just using it to see how well 2019 build 2170 worked with 2021.



The problem with using 2019-R3 is that the installer screws up the earlier versions of 2019. We need to be able to support our customers using apps built with 2019 build 2170 while also working with a newer version of PB for future versions of our app.

I see. In that case, you should use PB 2021. PB 2021 is just PB 2019R3 + PowerServer 2021.
